‘Stride with Pride’ – Shelter Birmingham 5k charity walk
On Saturday 10th October, housing and homelessness charity Shelter will be holding a 5k walk through Birmingham’s Gay Village, to raise awareness of how the city’s housing emergency impacts those from the LGBTQ+ community and vital funds to support the charity.
Stride with Pride is a sponsored daytime walk mapping three cities across the UK, pinpointing queer cultural landmarks in Manchester, Birmingham and London. The event will align with World Homeless Day on the 10th of October, an international day dedicated to raising awareness and collaborative action to address and prevent homelessness.
The event will raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community’s unique experiences of homelessness and the housing emergency, celebrate community, and generate vital funds for Shelter. It is accessible, family-friendly, and everyone is welcome.
Members of the community, allies, friends, family and the general public are invited to take part in this fundraising walk, passing different landmarks in Birmingham’s Gay Village. From Missing Bar to the Nightingale Club, we will take in many iconic LGBTQ+ destinations as we Stride with Pride.
The cost to attend is £5 per person, and there is a fundraising target of £75 per person.

Fiona Conn, Regional Community Fundraiser for Shelter in Birmingham, said: “Despite LGBTQ+ folks being disproportionately represented as a community affected by housing issues and homelessness, events raising awareness for this issue are few and far between. We want to change that. 1 in 4 LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 have experienced homelessness, which is a staggering amount. Funds raised from this event will help our frontline services to continue providing free and expert support to those facing homelessness, as well helping to campaign for lasting change.”
