Smithfield Works Set to Begin: Road Closures and Access Updates for Southside District
The Southside district is preparing for the first phase of construction on the major Smithfield redevelopment, a transformative project set to rejuvenate the heart of Birmingham.
Smithfield, encompassing the former wholesale markets as well as the existing Indoor, Open, and Outdoor markets, will soon become a vibrant mixed-use space. The new development will include residential, commercial, cultural, and leisure facilities, reshaping the landscape of central Birmingham.
As construction begins, several key road closures and changes to access routes are planned to facilitate the works:
Dean Street: The turning head next to Travelodge will be stopped up to allow construction of a new residential building.
Edgbaston Street: Set to close in spring 2027, although emergency and business access will be preserved. Pedestrian access and routes to St Martin’s Church will remain open throughout.
Bradford Street/Barford Street: The footpath near Birmingham Coach Station will be permanently stopped up, and Barford Street will be reduced from three to two lanes. However, full access to the National Express Coach Station will be maintained.
Upper Dean Street: Closure begins in autumn 2026 to enable delivery of the new Birmingham Indoor Market. This also impacts a nearby footpath on Moat Lane.
Bus routes 16, 16A, 35, 47, and 80 will be rerouted via Pershore Street, with stops relocated to Pershore Street and Moat Lane.
These changes mark a significant step toward creating a more welcoming and dynamic public space in the heart of the city. The Southside district is committed to keeping residents and businesses informed throughout this process.
